No matter where you are in your career; whether you’re embarking on your first role or your tenth, the prospect of starting a new job can be nerve-racking. It can be difficult to know what to expect and exciting all at the same time.

I recently made a move to Mason Alexander and here’s a few tips on what I found useful to help settle into a brand new working environment.

  1.  Get to know your colleagues

This could be the single most valuable way to ease the transition into a new job. Find out what your colleagues do and how long they have been around, for a start. Take the initiative to meet people. Go for lunch, go for a coffee, whatever it may be, just be sure to make the effort. Your team will be a key driver to both your happiness and future success in the company.

  1. Go in ready to learn

You may be going into a new position driven to do something, but first spend time listening and taking everything in. Ask more and tell less, roles can sometimes take time to develop into, give yourself the time you need to learn the basic’s first, before demanding immediate success.

  1. Understand the Culture

Fitting in at a new job often means observing the overall culture of the company and adapting. Use your first few weeks to absorb what goes on around you in order to understand the organisation’s values and how it engages with its customers, employees and the local community.

  1. Get organised and develop the right habits

With a new job, comes new information, setting good habits and getting organised from the start will make your life easier down the line. It’s a good opportunity to leave any bad habits you have acquired behind you and begin to create new ones that work better for you. Map out each day and begin putting it into practice.

  1. Talk to your boss

Communicating regularly with your boss is a great way to know if you’re on the right track. Do not forget that you can ask questions, give a status report and ask for feedback and recommendations. It’s the only way your going to improve.
