It was a great weekend for Irish Rugby –  watching our Boys in Green defeat the world’s greatest rugby team, on Soldier Field, Chicago. In the wake of many great victories, we can take example from those who inspire us. We can use Ireland’s performance last weekend as inspiration for the way we approach the job market.

Belief – Get your Game Face on

In looking for a new role, it is important to approach any opportunity, any interview, or any application with belief and optimism. It’s crucial to open your mind to the thought that “this could be the role for you”.

Candidates need to have a positive, open attitude towards potential opportunities in order to really explore the market, and see what options are available to them.

Ireland had lost to New Zealand all 28 times they had played them. The vast majority of fans and experts didn’t fancy their chances going into the game on Saturday either, however both the players and coaching staff had belief that they would put in a performance and get the win.

Preparation – Put together your Game Plan

The Irish team clearly went into this game full of ambition and belief. In any post-match interviews I watched, players and coaches mentioned the game plan.

Clearly this game plan consisted of tactics based on analysis – Analysis of the New Zealand team and how to contain their strengths, while also exploiting their weaknesses. Analysis too of Ireland’s strengths and weaknesses would have played a major part.

The same approach applies to preparation for any interview. It’s important to analyse the opportunity in great detail and show that your strengths can add value to the team, the role, and the company that you are interviewing for.

In order to do this you need to analyse the role, the company, and yourself. Focus on your strengths and experience, then display this crossover to the interviewers.

Perseverance and Determination – Getting “Over the Line”

It is not always smooth sailing throughout the career process; there may be mistakes made. On these occasions, it is important to dig deep, and persevere.

Searching for a new role can be difficult, there can be many implications to consider. Many complications can arise which affect the deal, and unforeseen circumstances may become factors in the process.

Many people go through dilemmas when decisions need to be made. It’s important to back your gut decision and stick to the original game plan in these situations.

We all got a scare when the All Blacks came back into the 2nd half however, the team kept their heads, stuck to the game plan and earned their victory.
