CV Tips for the panicked Candidates!
May 16th, 2016
It is often the case where I’ve had candidates panic when it comes to updating their CV’s. The regular questions that come to mind are; what do I write?, the layout?, what information is relevant and what’s not?
The advice I give is to first breath! I always say to review the responsibilities of the job description you are applying for almost as a check list of things that you have accomplished in your current and previous role, and to highlight these. I then advise to break down the resume into the following:
PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
A couple of sentences outlining your experience, your interest in the industry, the company and interest in the role. This should be no longer than 3 lines.
EDUCATION
Year University
Degree – result
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Company Name Month/Year – present
Job Title
Key Responsibilities
- Bullet points these
Key Achievements
- Any achievements or projects you’ve worked on, the results of them (these can be your examples in the interview)
- Highlight what you’ve done this year (relatable to the role). I know it can be difficult to think back on everything you’ve done, but try to highlight any achievements – relationship management, negotiations etc.
KEY SKILLS
- Languages, IT systems, anything else that is worth highlighting and is relatable to the role and company you are applying for.
KEY INTERESTS
- Employers like to see that you have interests and motivations outside of work. If you play a team sport, this is great to highlight as it show’s that you are team-oriented, and so, would work well with others.
